Materials Processed with an ATOM Flashcut Knife Cutting System

  Companies invest in cutting solutions in order to improve their "productivity". Productivity means different things to different people: faster and lower costs of production, short production runs become viable, very fast changeovers, no investment in traditional "hard" tooling, rapid prototyping, samples and pre-production runs, material savings and reduced scrap rate. Many of MSC clients have found that the versatility of our cutting systems enables them to accept otherwise impossible orders. The ability to produce prototypes and samples rapidly, gain customer approval and then produce production quantities is a powerful tool in building customer relationships.
Atom's production of cutting machines began over 60 years ago, initially designed to support the cutting needs of companies in the Vigevano footwear district. Our first products were specialized in the cutting of leather hides and it was challenging to use them for cutting materials with different properties. Over the years, we differentiated our production and versatility of our cutting systems to meet the cutting demands of diversified market sectors. Atom's committment in shipping cutting solutions for an ever growing number of industries drove our engineers to design machinery able to cut a growing number of different materials. Our cutting machines still cut the most traditional materials, but also can face the challenges by the most modern materials as well. it does not matter if your materials are thick or thin, hard or soft, we can cut almost any non-metallic materials, several materials with metal components (such as tanged graphite) and some metal based materials.
This site lists some of the materials currently cut on an Atom dieless system, we realize that many other types of materials are cut using our systems, so if you do not find your product listedn please feel free to contact our support team for information. Their vast experience in the cutting field will help you choose the ideal cutting solution for your application.

Leather Hides: Utilizing and ATOM oscillating knife cutting table the need for cutting dies are eliminated, therefore this technology is very flexible and suitable for cutting samples & prototypes. However, our experience collected over the past years thanks to hundreds of installations throughout the world for companies producing leathergoods, footwear, car interiors and furniture allowed us to realize this technology can be used to cut normal production runs as well, allowing considerable material & workforce savings.

ATOM produces some models with the needs of car upholstery & furniture manufacturing in mind;
  • Flashcut model 30180 (3.050mm x 1.800mm), can process either half bovine hides full bovine hides operating in two steps.
  • Flashcut model 61260 (6.100mm x 2.600mm) allows it to host two full bovine hides at one time. It is thus possible to unload cut parts, position a new hide and prepare nesting in a position while the machine is cutting another hide. This system can be equipped with a single gantry or a dual gantry for maximum production.
Asbestos Free: ATOM dieless cutting systems are so versatile to handle all the available non asbestos materials, Klinger, Garlock, Flexitallic & Frenzelit, regardless of their thickness, are cut with ease. Dieless cutting is the ideal solution for prototyping and small-medium production runs (>1,000 Parts). Some models can be quipped with an automatic material feeder for feeding products in rolls. The automatic nesting software package allows automatic optimization of layouts using optimized algorithms, supporting the "shape within shape" function, especially useful when mixing large and small gaskets. It is also possible to use scrap or remnants of previous cuts to cut smaller shapes, regardless of their shape, when equipped with the over-head digital projectors, the nesting can handle them automatically.

Tanged Graphite: Tanged graphite is a complex material since it is composed by layers of graphite and steel reinforcement sheets. These materials have different properties and cutting together the fragilegraphite and hard steel can be challenging. As far as we know, the Flashcut is best knife based solution on the market for tanged graphite. Our machines can cut and kind of thickness of this material withone or more layers of steel at very high speeds. With the amazing cutting speeds, the Flashcut is the ideal solution for small, medium and even high production runs.

Paper/Cardboard: A dieless cutter is the optimal solution for fast prototyping and production of samples. Cut and crease all with one cutting system. Paper and its derivatives, such as fiber cardboard, cellulose based materials and many more are used in a growing number of industries. For example, you can find these materials in some gaskets, counters, toepuffs and other components used in footwearand of course in packaging products.

Textile Materials: The versatility of an ATOM dieless cutting system allows textile manufacturers to cut an infinite variety of products like kevlar, microfibers, mylar & Goretex. Of course this category includes the most traditional fibers such as cotton, linen, slik, hempen cloth, wool and the mosy common synthetic fibers. Single or multiple layers can be processed with ease. Companies producing small quantities of parts or prototypes will find them extremely useful. They are widely used in the "after market" for car interiors, since companies who customize them do not need to cut huge quantities of similar items, they need flexibility and reliability to economically produce small batches or even unique parts.

Teflon/PTFE: An ATOM oscillating knife cutting table is ideal for cutting teflon of low and medium thickness. This cutting solution is the best choice for prototyping, samples and small-mdeium production runs, especially when they are composed of several different shapes. Teflon is a Dupont Trademark.

Foam-Rubber: With the new addition of the ATOM HD Series Flashcut, companies can now cut, with ease and accuracy, foam & rubber materials up too 100mm in thickness. This new cutting solution offers foam & rubber converters a tremendous advantage over traditional water cutting due to the considerably less daily operating costs. In addition, the traditional hard tooling commonly used on a cutting press is now eliminated so prototypes, small & medium production runs can be processed within minutes after the shape file is created. There is no other knife cutting system produced in the world that can process materials up too this thickness nor the intricate geometry that can be cut!

Nonwovens: The "non-woven" materials and felts realized using recycled maaterials are used above all in the automotive industry, products for household cleaning and for filters used in several articles. One particular product of similar nature, 3M's Scotch Brite, used in several objects such as abrasive sponges, floor shining discs and many more.
